Scots Silenced At Home By Maryville
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- 11 different Maryville Scots entered into the scoring column and the visiting Scots took home a 76-52 victory over Covenant on Wednesday night inside Barnes Physical Education Center. Covenant dropped their second straight game with the loss and sees their record fall to 5-15 and 1-4 in GSAC action. Maryville improves to 12-8 on the season and 3-2 in conference games.
Covenant had trouble from the opening tip as the Scots seemed to have issues handling Maryville’s pressure defense. Covenant turned the ball over 14 times in the first half alone, and committed 24 for the game.
Maryville trailed just once, at 4-2 after a Damien Chaney layup, and dominated for the better part of the first half. The visitors used several scoring runs to build a 21-point lead in the first half. Maryville went into the break up 44-23 after a pair of free throws by Donald Rucker.
The home Scots were able to cut down on their turnovers in the second half, but then scoring became an issue. Maryville used an 11-0 scoring run in the first five minutes of the second half to build an almost insurmountable lead at 55-23. Covenant would only get as close as 63-42 on a jumper by Rosbie Mutcherson with eight minutes remaining.
No player scored in double figures for Covenant, but Callum Sears and Colton McGriff each had eight points. Reigning GSAC player of the week Bryant Engbers was limited to seven points and two rebounds. Covenant did shoot 40 percent (16-of-50) for the game, but was outrebounded 39-24.
Milton Stanley led Maryville with 15 points and two steals. Maverick Willett added 12 points and Craig Raye chipped in 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Covenant returns to action on Saturday with a GSAC game at LaGrange College. Game time is set for 4 p.m. LaGrange defeated Covenant 77-66 earlier this season.
