Turnovers Prove Costly as Scots Fall to Temple in Closing Seconds
Lookout Mountain, GA- The Covenant College men's basketball team was on the verge of claiming its fourth win of the season Tuesday night, but fell just short as Tennessee Temple snatched victory with a last second tip-in. After tying the game at 65 off a Chris "CJ" Robinson jumper with 34 seconds remaining, Covenant was unable to stop Temple from moving down the court and rebounding their own shot for the win as time ran out. The loss will be even tougher for the Scots to swallow when they consider the fact that they led by eight at halftime.
"We fought hard tonight," said Coach Taylor after the game, "but when you turn the ball over 29 times you cannot expect to win too many games at the college level." Indeed, turnovers haunted the Scots for much of the night, as Tennessee Temple was able to take advantage of the errors and convert them into points. It was Temple's Ed Pellot-Rosa who led all players with 18 points. Covenant's Sam Bowman nearly matched him in points, though, scoring 16, and also pulling down a game high 16 rebounds. "Sam Bowman had a big night," said Taylor, "He played big and was aggressive on the glass." Zarome Lakey was second for the Scots with 14 points.
After the loss, the Scots will now travel to face Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday. Wesleyan has lost to Temple twice in the 2009-2010 season by a combined 6 point margin.
