Scot Taylor Oldham Named to Coastal Plain League All-Star Team
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant's shortstop Taylor Oldham, a more recent member of the Martinsville Mustangs of the CPL, has been selected to the league's 2010 All-Star game to be held in Forest City, North Carolina Tuesday, July 20th. Oldham will unfortunately be unable to participate in the event due to injury, but the honor is nonetheless truly esteeming.
The Coastal Plain League is one of the top summer baseball leagues in the country. It boasts premier players from different schools across the east coast: from smaller schools like Covenant College and Belmont University to larger schools such as Villanova and NC State. In fact, several members of the Division I championship-winning South Carolina Gamecocks are listed on CPL rosters this year.
To be named to the All-Star team, players are voted on by each of the 15 teams' head coaches and media representatives. Once the votes are tallied, the All-Stars are known, but selections for their particular team are decided on through a draft process. This draft, held between the American head coach and the National head coach, determines who plays where.
Oldham earned his spot on the "American" team through this summer's efforts, which saw him as one of the league leaders in batting average, home runs, and runs scored when his untimely injury occurred. During a slide into second base, Taylor broke his thumb and will miss the remainder of the summer season as a result.
The Coastal Plain League 2010 All-Star Fan Fest and All-Star Game will be hosted by the Forest City Owls- one of the CPL's member teams- at McNair Field in Forest City, North Carolina. Festivities for the All-Star event will begin Monday, July 19th at 5:00pm. The evening will include an autograph session and the CPL home-run derby. The actual All-Star game will take place Tuesday night at 7:05pm.
