Men’s Doubles and Women’s Singles Help Covenant Dominate University of the Cumberlands

Chattanooga, TN- Covenant's tennis teams improved on their seasons Monday evening by taking wins over the University of the Cumberlands. The men's match started out with a sweep of all three doubles to give Covenant a 3-0 lead going into singles. The singles spots won were #3 John Hirte, with an easy victory of 6-2, 6-1, #4 Stephen Woody at 7-5, 6-1, and #6 Brandon Snipes with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. The University of the Cumberlands won at #1, #2 and a tough match at #5 with John Hill defeating Johnny Herberich in a close, third set breaker: 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Clarkesville, GA- For the second time in the 2009-2010 season, Covenant's golf team traveled to Clarkesville, Georgia to play in Piedmont College's semi-annual golf tournament held at The Orchard Golf and Country Club. During their first trip September 21-22 of 2009, the competition was cut short due to unrelenting rain, and the teams were only able to play through one round of the would be 36-hole event. Pine Mountain, GA- The Scots opened their spring season in Pine Mountain, Georgia playing in the Callaway Invitational which is played at the past PGA tour stop, Callaway Gardens. Senior Trevor Potts started his spring season with a solid 74 and found himself in 8th place after round 1. The course was soft and played very long, a good match for the long hitting Potts. However, the rest of the Covenant squad struggled and yielded its worse team score this year at 328 in the first round.

Cleveland, TN- Covenant's tennis teams traveled the short distance to Cleveland, Tennessee on Friday to face a familiar foe in Lee University. Despite a 9-0 loss for the women and an 8-1 loss for the men, the match was closer than the final score indicates.

Josh Jeremiah (men's #1 singles) and Jane Shibley (women's #4 singles) each missed on an opportunity to push their match to a third set after dropping the second in an 8-6 tie-break. Shibley's match went nearly 3 hours.

Softball Loses Twice at Trevecca Nazarene University, 12-4 and 6-1

Nasheville, TN- Trevecca Nazarene's Megan Hemmingsen had a career day against Covenant on Thursday, going 4 for 5 with 6 RBI to help the Lady Trojans claim two victories over the visiting Lady Scots. Her efforts alongside an impressive 21 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched by Riley Mashburn and Lauren Baker put Trevecca at a serious advantage.

But Covenant had their chances. The Lady Scots left 13 runners stranded, 6 of which were left in scoring position.

Chattanooga, TN- Covenant's tennis teams started the spring season this afternoon with two commanding victories over the visiting Panthers of LaGrange College. The men's 9-0 win saw some impressive debuts by freshmen Stephen Woody at #2 singles and Tom Yates at #5 Singles. Senior Garrett Reid had the toughest match at #1, but his fitness and experience helped him manage a come-from-behind win.
