Covenant Hosts AAC Tennis Tournament, Lady Scots Finish Second and Scots Third


Covenant hosted the conference tournament at the Champions Club this past Friday and Saturday. Thursday night all the teams were treated to a meal provided by Carrabba's to kick off the tournament.

 

Friday morning the awards were handed out and the following students were honored:  All Academic - Julia Myers, Chelsey Schortmann, Jane Shibley, Josh Jeremiah.  All Conference - Josh Jeremiah (missed player of the year by one point), Casey Cochran. Honorable Mention - Adam Herberich, Jane Shibley and Julia Myers.  Champions of Character for both men and women as a team and Adam Herberich the Sportman of the Year.

 

The girls beat Bluefield 5-0 Friday to advance to the semi-final while the guys beat UVA Wise 5-0 to advance to the semi-final. Friday afternoon turned out to be a long hot one with both teams playing Tennessee Wesleyan to get to the finals. The girls team won a tough match that lasted over 4 hours.

 

Play started with Covenant taking the #3 doubles point Jane Shibley/Chelsey Schortmann and then #1 (Myers/Ramage)lost a close one after being up 7-4 dropped the pro set 9-7. #2 (Cochran/Janie Sizemore) pulled out a close one 9-7 for Covenant to go up 2-1 after singles. Chelsey Schortmann won first at #6 to give Covenant a 3-1 lead then Julia Myers lost at #1 to make it 3-2.

 

Freshman Janie Sizemore battled a close match at #4 and won to give Covenant the edge 4-2 with all other matches in tight 3rd sets. Freshman Jane Shibley was the first to win at #5 to give Covenant the 5-2 win and the other matches were halted in progess.  

 

On the men's side Covenant started their semi-final match against Tennessee Wesleyan 2 1/2 hours late due to the length of the women's match. They came out flat and lost the #3 (Herberich/Herberich) doubles , followed by #2 (Bernardez/Hirte) with #1(Jeremiah/Reid) still to finish. They had chances at #1 but were unable to capitalize on them and lost 9-7 giving Tennessee Wesleyan the huge advantage of going into singles up 3-0.

 

The matches were competitive across the board but Jonny Herberich lost first at #5 to Chattanooga native Eric Chastain. Freshman John Hirte was able to come back from 2-5 in the first to win it in a tie breaker, while freshman Ryan Bernardez won easily at #4, giving Covenant its first point to be down 1-4. Garrett Reid #2 was in a 3rd set and Adam Herberich #6 was in a close second set when #1 Josh Jeremiah lost to Cody Gaby, giving Tennessee Wesleyan the 5-1 win. 

 

The men finished the season 10-9.  

 

Saturday morning the women's team faced Union, the #25 ranked team in the country. The girls started out a little slow but then got going. #3 doubles had opportunities but eventually fell in a tie breaker 9-8. #2 doubles started playing better but after getting down 6-1 it was just too much to come back and win while #1 doubles also lost. The Union team went into singles with a comfortable 3-0 lead but the Covenant women battled hard and played some great tennis. Catie Ramage #3 was winning, #6 Chelsey Schortmann was winning, #4 Janie Sizemore lost a close first set in a tie breaker and Casey Cochran was in a close match when #5 Jane Shibley lost and then #1 Julia Myers lost to give Union the 5-0 win.

 

The women finished the year second in the conference with a winning record of 12-6.
