FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- For a fourth consecutive year, the Covenant baseball team has earned the USA South Sportsmanship award for its sport while the Covenant men's tennis team picked up its second-ever Sportsmanship honor, announced the conference on Thursday.

The baseball and men's tennis awards make it a total of five Covenant programs that have claimed team sportsmanship awards this year. Men's soccer, volleyball and men's basketball also were voted as sportsmanship recipients.

The baseball program, under head coach Doug Simons, has won the honor all four years since joining the USA South in the 2013-14 academic year. The award for men's tennis, under head coach John Hirte, is its second overall and first since 2014.

Mary Baldwin collected the award for softball, while Greensboro, Wesleyan and William Peace each earned a share of the honor in the sport of women's tennis. Meredith was voted as the lacrosse winner.

During the 2004-05 academic year the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) instituted a conference-wide Sportsmanship Award. The conference hands out a Sportsmanship Award for 11 conference-sponsored team sports. Men's and women's cross country, along with men's golf, are not included due to a lack of a conference schedule in those particular sports. For each of the other sports, all team members vote for the teams he/she deemed to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. The team garnering the most votes receives that sports' Sportsmanship Award.

The institution which wins the most individual sport awards will be presented with the overall USA South Sportsmanship Trophy. The award was developed as a result of the SAAC's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each of our campuses. Covenant has claimed at least a share of the USA South Sportsmanship Trophy in each of the last three years.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hopes that by awarding a Sportsmanship Award, the members of the USA South will understand the importance of this issue. It is vital that good sportsmanship be demonstrated in the arena of competition.
